Steroids are synthetic fat-soluble organic compounds whose structure is based on naturally occurring steroid nucleus. The female hormones estrogen, progesterone, and HGH hormones for men including testosterone, all vitamins of the Vitamin D group, cardiac aglycones, sterols like cholesterol and many more are steroids. Synthetic forms of these steroids are used in medicines and beneficial for many disorders and normal functioning of the body.



Types of Steroids

Steroids are of three types namely anabolic, androgenic and cortico steroids. Anabolic steroids are derived from testosterone. Several trials were made to separate anabolic effects of the hormones from their androgenic effects but could get little success. Therefore, use of anabolic steroids can made androgenic side effects especially if used for longer periods.

Androgenic Steroids

Androgenic steroid helps in growth and development of male sexual characteristics. It can be used to treat hereditary angioedema, anemia and to reduce the itching of chronic biliary obstruction.

Cortico Steroids

Cortico steroids are used for the treatment of asthma, eczema, allergies, arthritis, colitis and kidney disease.

Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are helpful for protein building when used for increasing muscle mass and strength. These are available in the form of supplements.

Effects of Steroids

Steroids are used for many purposes including growth of children, stimulating bone marrow function, osteoporosis, improving strength stamina and regulating sexual features. Side Effects of Steroids

Side effects of steroids

Misuse or overuse of steroids is hazardous and can cause serious side effects. It affects hormonal system that causes infertility, breast enlargement, shrinking of the testicles in men and excessive hair growth, enlargement of clitoris in females. The other side effects include Short stature, muscle break, Heart attacks, enlargement of heart, cancer, Acne and cysts, Hepatitis, Infection, Mania, and Delusions.

It is highly suggested to use these steroids only after doctor’s prescription, as misuse or overuse of these is dangerous. Their use is beneficial only when benefits outweigh the risks. Short term and low dose is preferred for safe results.
